Death and Satanism are dominant themes in Christopher Marlowe’s ‘The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus’. Marlowe shows throughout the play that Faust’s vow to be a servant of Satan negatively impacts upon his life and how remorseful Faust is at the end for his actions. Magic is also an underlying motif throughout the play. Each time Faust uses magic in the play, it is an indication of Faust’s demoralization. Faust uses his magic to play tricks on people, summons demons with it, and even used it to bring Helen of Troy to him as a comfort in his final hours. The most obvious theme in Doctor Faustus is the battle between good and evil. The play commences with Faustus finding himself torn between the two, knowing the distinction quite clearly but overwhelmed by his desire for worldly pleasures. Faustus’s desire for human satisfaction is personified through the seven deadly sins which all tempt him, eventually brining about his own damnation. The battle between good and evil is also depicted through the good and evil angels who try to influence his behaviour. Faustus well knows the consequences of listening to the evil angels as opposed to the good ones but cannot resist the mortal pleasures the devil offers. Last week Crystal palace beat Manchester United to send them dismally crashing out of the esteemed professional UK football tournament the league cup. In spite of the fact that Manchester United played a younger, weaker team than is usual, this result was a complete shock to most of the football world. This is especially the case when one considers the poor season that Crystal Palace have had so far this year. They are struggling with their league form, and may be stuck in a dogged relegation battle at the end of the season. The glory is all theirs for now though, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be enjoying this brief period of glory in what looks to be a very difficult season. It was even more difficult for one Palace fan who bet his months salary on Manchester winning the match. He did this to offset the disappointment he anticipated feeling when his team were knocked out. However now he has the financial disappointment which was completely unanticipated. If he had just played Lotto UK instead, he could have used his luck to make more money, not to lose money!
Today in America it is Thanksgiving, which means tomorrow it is Black Friday, traditionally marking the beginning of the Christmas shopping season! To be honest, the Christmas shopping season has been in full swing in the UK for a while already, but in America they've got the right idea. Most non-retail employees get the day off and everyone goes shopping! Most major retailers will open super early - some at like 4am - and will have big promotions on almost everything in store. Apple are holding Black Friday in all their stores, including the ones here in the UK. As usual they're remaining tight-lipped about what discounts there will be and on what items, but it's certainly one that's worth checking out. I could do with a new laptop and my iPod broke a while back so I might get up and head down to my nearest store on Friday. I usually do all my shopping online, I can usually search and sniff out a good deal and save myself a lot of money by using the Internet. I got a great deal on my new camera, my r4i gold card, musical equipment and all sorts of other things! Photo: buzz.bishop (Flickr)
Just who invented the telephone has always been a matter of dispute and continues to be. Those who are most frequently credited with inventing the phone are Charles Bourseul, Johann Philipp Reis, Antonio Menucci, Elisha Gray, and Alexander Graham Bell. A complex web of claims and counterclaims surrounds exactly who invented the first electric telephone and a huge mass of lawsuits were launched concerning the patent claims of individuals and commercial enterprises. Court decisions and superior telephone technology led to the upholding of the Bell and Edison patents. Alexander Graham Bell is most often credited with inventing the first telephone yet this is riddled with controversy concerning Elisha Gray. What exactly is under question is whether Bell and Gray invented the phone independently and if this was not the case, did Bell steal the invention from Gray? The U.S. House of Representatives recognized Antonio Meucci’s contributory work on the telephone in June 2002 in a congressional resolution. Whoever did invent the phone, we are greatly indebted to them and to all those who worked tirelessly to improve the invention. Because of these individuals we merely have to go to Three.co.uk/store and can buy a phone.
Red is a colour evoked by light that consists predominantly of the longest possible wavelengths discernible by the naked human eye, a wavelength range of 630 nm to 740 nm. If the wavelengths are longer than this range, the colour is called infrared and cannot be perceived by humans. The etymology of the word ‘red’ derives from the Sanskrit word ‘rudhira’ which means blood or red. In the Proto-Indo European tongue, red was the root ‘reudh-‘, and in the Proto-Germanic language, red was ‘rauthaz’. In Old English, the word ‘red’ was ‘rēad’. Red has certain associations in the English language with, not led gu10 bulbs, but blood, certain flowers (such as roses), fire, the sun, socialism, and ripe fruits (such as apples and cherries). Red is also seen as a symbol of anger, guilt, passion, and anger, often as a result of its connection with blood. In Isaiah for example: “Though your sins be scarlet, they shall be white as snow”.
